“Mechanical thrombectomy is a treatment used to remove a large blood clot from inside a blood vessel in a patient’s brain,” explains Dr John Thornton. “Before this was developed, Irish patients were receiving clot-busting drugs to help dissolve the clot instead of pulling the clot out but what became evident was that these drugs didn’t work as well when there was a large blockage in the brain. Thrombectomy provides the greatest chance of patient recovery from large blockages which cause the most devastating strokes.”
After you’re treated for stroke, you may be screened for atrial fibrillation (AFib)—a heart rhythm disorder that, untreated, causes an estimated 15 percent of strokes. Because an irregular heartbeat may not appear for weeks, your Cone Health doctors may recommend placing an implantable loop recorder—a small device that can monitor your heart for up to three years, giving us a better chance of uncovering your AFib and helping you prevent subsequent strokes. Cone Health is a leader and early adapter of this technology for stroke prevention.

Your doctor will check your blood pressure and use a stethoscope to listen to your heart and to listen for a whooshing sound (bruit) over your neck (carotid) arteries, which may indicate atherosclerosis. Your doctor may also use an ophthalmoscope to check for signs of tiny cholesterol crystals or clots in the blood vessels at the back of your eyes.
Promoting independence in self-care can provide older adults with the capability to maintain independence longer and can leave them with a sense of achievement when they complete a task unaided. Older adults that require assistance with activities of daily living are at a greater risk of losing their independence with self-care tasks as dependent personal behaviours are often met with reinforcement from caregivers.[42] It is important for caregivers to ensure that measures are put into place to preserve and promote function rather than contribute to a decline in status in an older adult that has physical limitations. Caregivers need to be conscious of actions and behaviors that cause older adults to become dependent on them and need to allow older patients to maintain as much independence as possible. Providing information to the older patient on why it is important to perform self-care may allow them to see the benefit in performing self-care independently. If the older adult is able to complete self-care activities on their own, or even if they need supervision, encourage them in their efforts as maintaining independence can provide them with a sense of accomplishment and the ability to maintain independence longer.[43]

Endovascular procedures. Endovascular procedures may be used to treat certain hemorrhagic strokes. The doctor inserts a long tube through a major artery in the leg or arm and then guides the tube to the site of the weak spot or break in a blood vessel. The tube is then used to install a device, such as a coil, to repair the damage or prevent bleeding.

Suffering from a stroke can lead to a wide range of serious and possibly life-threatening repercussions, so if anyone in your family is affected by this condition, you should take immediate action. With only a small percentage of patients ever fully recovering from a stroke, rehabilitative measures have become an important step in post-stroke patient care. The success of these measures depends to a large extent on the experience and training of the medical team, so you may want to consider one or more of the following elite stroke rehabilitation centers.
All patients exhibiting symptoms of stroke are triaged as a patient for Stroke Alert. When this determination is made, numerous things will begin to happen quickly. The team of nurses, emergency physicians, neurologists, radiologists, critical care doctors, surgeons and others can make treatment determinations within 60 minutes of symptom presentation.

Before you are discharged from the hospital, social workers can help you find care services and caregiver support to continue your long-term recovery. It is important to work with your health care team to find out the reasons for your stroke and take steps to prevent another stroke.

Fast recognition and treatment can not only make the difference between life and death, but it can also decrease long-term disabilities. To develop a streamlined response to potential stroke patients, the American Heart Association developed the Stroke Chain of Survival. The chain involves eight links or steps to be taken by patients, family members, prehospital and emergency room personnel in caring for stroke patients.

The Ninth Five-Year Plan included policies in an attempt to care for the elderly left without children as caretakers.[30] A Senior Health Facilities Fund has been established in each district.[30] The Senior Citizens Health Facilities Program Implementation Guideline, 2061BS provides medical facilities to the elderly, and to those that are poverty stricken, free medicine and health care in all districts.[30] In its yearly budget, the government has planned to fund free health care to all heart and kidney patients older than 75.[30] Unfortunately, many of these plans are overly ambitious, which has been recognized by the Nepali government.[30] Nepal is a developing nation and may not be able to fund all of these programs after the development of an Old Age Allowance, or OAA. OAA provides a monthly stipend to all citizens over 70 and widows over 60.[30]

To determine the most appropriate treatment for your stroke, your emergency team needs to evaluate the type of stroke you're having and the areas of your brain affected by the stroke. They also need to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms, such as a brain tumor or a drug reaction. Your doctor may use several tests to determine your risk of stroke, including:
One of the major causes of elderly falls is hyponatremia, an electrolyte disturbance when the level of sodium in a person's serum drops below 135 mEq/L. Hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte disorder encountered in the elderly patient population. Studies have shown that older patients are more prone to hyponatremia as a result of multiple factors including physiologic changes associated with aging such as decreases in glomerular filtration rate, a tendency for defective sodium conservation, and increased vasopressin activity. Mild hyponatremia ups the risk of fracture in elderly patients because hyponatremia has been shown to cause subtle neurologic impairment that affects gait and attention, similar to that of moderate alcohol intake.[47]
